The Exotic Northeast of Myanmar
Myanmar’s Northeast is known for its exotic charm. From Pyin Oo Lwin , the train takes travelers through a thrilling valley, crossing the Gokteik Viaduct constructed by the United States which is the second-highest railway bridge in the world. After the bridge, the train arrives at Hsipaw (Thibaw), the former capital of the Shan Kingdom, where an Austrian-born Shan princess once lived. The remnants of its former glory can still be seen today. A five-hour drive from Lashio, the railway terminus city, connects travelers to Muse, the major border city on the Myanmar–China border. Alternatively, another route leads to Kengtung (Kyaingtong), a town famous for various ethnic minority communities and trekking spots. From there, you can proceed to Mong La (Milar), often called the “Myanmar’s Las Vegas,” due to its exotic charm and nightlife. Here, a world of casinos and a sleepless border city on the Myanmar-China border. This astonishing sight will make you question if you are truly still in Myanmar.
Gokteik Viaduct
Built in 1901 by an American company, it is the second-highest railway bridge in the world. A thrilling train journey across the bridge is sure to become a memorable experience.
Hsipaw (Thibaw / Si-Bo)
Hsipaw was once a central city of Shan State. This town is famous for being the home of an Austrian-born Shan princess who lived here until 1962. The train journey from Mandalay to Hsipaw passes over the Goteik Viaduct, the second-highest railway bridge in the world.
Lashio
Lashio is predominantly populated by Chinese-Shan residents and is located at the northeastern terminus of the railway line from Mandalay. Notable attractions include Chinese temples, local markets, and hot springs.
Muse
Muse, located in the northeast of Myanmar, is a border town between Myanmar and China, reachable by a 10 to 12-hour drive from Mandalay. Visiting Muse requires a special permit, which must be arranged through a travel agency at least 10–15 days in advance. While it is possible to visit the Chinese border town, the application must explicitly state the intention to visit China.
Kengtung (Kyaingtong)
Kengtung (Kyaingtong), often called the “City of the Golden Triangle,” is located in the eastern part of Shan State and is a deep-mountain town inhabited by numerous tribes. If traveling by car, one must navigate approximately 165 kilometers of rough roads from Tachileik. Trekking to visit villages of the Akha, Lahu, Wa, Lisu, and Shan will be a wonderful and unforgettable experience.
Mong La (Milar)
Mong La is a border town between Myanmar and China, located about a two-hour drive from Kyaingtong. This exotic town is known for its modern casinos and entertainment shows.
